Quick answers to the questions we hear most often. Each one links to a longer guide.
Tanning
Does a spray tan protect my skin from the sun?
No. A sunless tan does not protect against sunburn. Tanning products without sunscreen are required by the FDA to carry a warning saying so. Keep using a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Learn how spray tanning works.
How long does a spray tan last?
Usually around a week. The color sits in the outermost layer of skin and fades as those cells are shed. Moisturizing and gentle showers help it last. See our aftercare tips.
What should I do to prepare for a spray tan?
Exfoliate and handle hair removal a day or more ahead, arrive with clean skin free of lotion, deodorant and perfume, and wear loose, dark clothing. Use our checklist.
Is it safe to breathe in spray tan mist?
The FDA advises that DHA should not be inhaled and should be kept away from the lips, nose and eye area. Ask for protection and avoid breathing in the spray.
Will a base tan protect me on vacation?
Very little. The FDA says tanned skin provides a sun protection factor of only about 2 to 4, well below the recommended minimum of SPF 15. Read more about tanning beds.
Do tanning pills work?
The FDA states that tanning pills are not FDA approved and reports harms linked to canthaxanthin, an ingredient used in some of them. Explore safer self-tanning options.
Red light therapy
Will red light therapy give me a tan?
No. Red light is visible light, not ultraviolet, and it does not tan the skin. Read what the research says.
Is red light therapy proven to work?
Research shows some potential for certain uses, but many studies so far have been small or lacked a placebo group, so more evidence is needed.
